Get a credit card from local bank and pay it in time. You also can use this service to avoid common mistakes while buiding credit and pre-estimate future scores for different scenarios of payments - creditreport.imess.net

Talk to your banker, tell them you want to establish your credit

Go to your local bank or credit union, open up a savings account for $1000.00, tell them you want a loan against the savings account. Repay the loan on time for at least 12 months.

Also tell them you want a secured credit card, put down $300.00 for the card. Pay your balance off in full each month.

After a few months try to apply for a unsecured card. Again pay your balances off in full each month, make sure you make your payments ON TIME.

It takes about 24 months of consistent on time payments, to establish your credit score.

Probably the best way to start building a credit history is to apply for a store credit card like Gap or Macy's. They're easier to get, have smaller credit lines, but have high interest rates. It may take you a few months to establish good credit with them. I wouldn't apply for more than two to start. Use them in a limited way just to show that you are reliable with payments. Good luck!

Ask the bank if they will do a secured card for you. This means if you want a $1000 credit limit, you deposit $1000 into a savings account. You can't withdraw from the savings account while the card is available, because it's there to ensure you will pay them back.

A secured card accomplishes 2 things. If gives you a way to pay without carrying cash around and as you make payments on time to pay the card off, it builds your credit history. At the end of 1 year of having the card, the limit is adjusted and/or the secured account requirement is eliminated.

The other way to get a credit history is to apply with gasoline companies and department stores. Sears used to be a good starter card. The cards have low limits and can only be used at that chain, but payments will get reported to the credit bureaus.
