Why did the free credit check ask me for a credit card number?

bennie asked:

I need a credit check on myself. I have done this in the past, and never needed a credit card number. I have never given a credit card number without being charged.
Does anyone know of a free credit check without giving a credit card number?

because it is not free.I think you can call equafax and get one free credit check a year then you have to pay after the free one.

Because they usually sign you up for a free monthly trial of something, then if you forget to cancel it, they will bill you for a monthy service. It is a scam. There are no free credit reports w/o a catch online, but you can request a free credit report once a year for free no catches. They will, however, mail it to you in paper form.
